Water Heater Woes

OKC, OK.

Well, the last week our water heater decided to give up and spring a leak, I guess at 12 years old they tend to do that. How did I find this out you ask? It was during one of our freezing nights, the next morning I went out to check on something and noticed this beautiful cascade of icicles from below the water heater area. I little investigative work and I found the water heater to be completely wet on the bottom and the floor underneath soaked. Thank goodness we have a built in water heater bypass valve, so I bypass the water and set out in search of a new one. After scouring the internet I found a good deal at PPL and made the purchase. I did check the local suppliers, but they wanted 150.00 more plus tax.

My plan was to install it myself (installed one before), but after looking at what I would need to do, several trips to the lowes, RV parts house, etc and several hours of work, I decided to let a pro do it.
Enter Bill, our local Mobile RV Repair guy. Had the old heater out and the new one installed in just 2 hours. Inital testing seemed to go well and he was off. After a few hours the heater just seemed not to be working right, so we called Bill and he said he would be back out in the morning to check it out. Long story short, the heater was shipped with a faulty control box (upper right of the below picture). Bill went down to his supplier and picked up a new one $225.00 to replace the faulty one. Now here the great part, he did not charge us to come back out and did not charge us for the new part, just said he would have Atwood send him a new one and he would keep it for his stock. Now is that customer service or what!!! We have used him before and will continue to give him all our business and send other his way also.

So after all that, we have a nice shinny new water heater which is working perfectly!!!

One extra plug for Bill. There are several other Mobile RV Repair services, however all of them charge a $75.00 - $100.00 service call plus their hourly rate. Bill only charges you the hourly rate and no service call. So, if your are ever in or travelling through OKC and need some work done, give him a call, he's in the book.
That's it for now, we'll see you next time, as we enjoy having nice hot water again!!!

  1. Sometimes it's not worth the hassle of doing things yourself and it would have been up to you to trouble shoot the problem with the control box. by the time the company would have made it right for you would have been a couple weeks time. Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  2. You're in hot water now! That mobile repair guy is a gem, you need to hook his truck up to your MH and take him with you. Good ones are hard to find.

Hope your OKC weather is treating you nice.

  3. It’s a good thing that you let the pro install the water heater, even though you know how to install it. Doing just that saves you time and energy installing it by yourself. Also, professional knows best, and assures you that it is properly installed. I hope the new water heater will last longer than 12 years. +Javier Hallum

  4. We had our water heater replaced when it was 8 years old. Me, dad and my bro all tried to install it but didn’t work, so instead of frustrating ourselves more by waiting and trying and failing, we called in a pro. It didn’t even take him an hour to install it, so it didn’t cost me much. Javier is right; leave it to those who know how to do it.
